Start with the identity
Confirm the VIN identifies a 2019 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited and matches the logbook, frame markings, import file and seller's identity. Verify Phoenix Orange Metallic and Dark or Chrome trim from the build documentation rather than treating colour as mechanical proof. Check that the machine can be legally transferred and insured in its Kenyan registration class before paying a deposit.
Demand recall evidence
Run the VIN through an authorised BRP channel. Certain 2015-2019 Spyder RT and F3 vehicles were recalled for front-sprocket wear that could cause loss of propulsion; BRP's final repair replaces the sprocket and screw. Transport Canada also lists certain 2017-2019 RT and F3 models for an engine output-shaft issue that could cause loss of drive. Ask for the VIN result and completed-repair invoices. A seller saying the machine feels fine is not evidence that either campaign is closed.
Inspect it cold and scan everything
Start from cold, listen for abnormal mechanical noise, check warning-lamp self-tests and watch for smoke, leaks or overheating. A specialist should scan all BRP modules and preserve the report. Test the six-speed semi-automatic in every gear and reverse, then confirm smooth take-up and predictable downshifts. Check the drive belt, sprockets, cooling system, charging output, parking brake, power steering, ABS and stability-control warnings.
Chassis, tyres and brakes
Inspect the front suspension, steering joints and alignment. Uneven front-tyre wear can be a clue to alignment, pressure or component problems, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. Confirm all three tyres are the correct size, load and speed rating, record their manufacture dates and obtain replacement quotes before purchase. Measure brake wear, inspect hoses and test the foot-operated linked braking system safely. Examine the underside because published ground clearance is only 115 mm.
Test every touring feature
Operate the electric windscreen repeatedly. Test the self-levelling rear air suspension with and without passenger or luggage load, heated grips, cruise control, BRP Connect display, every handlebar switch, the six-speaker audio system, lights, fog lamps, luggage locks and seals. Check for water ingress and repaired bodywork in every storage compartment. Model-specific panels and electronics may be expensive to import, so small faults are not automatically small bills.
Put the support plan on paper
BRP's official Can-Am On-Road country selector did not list Kenya when checked, and an authorised Kenyan on-road dealer was not verified. Before purchase, name the workshop, confirm BRP diagnostic access, list the source for service and recall parts, and obtain realistic freight times. Ask BRP or a regional authorised dealer in writing how software updates, safety campaigns and parts orders for this VIN will be handled from Kenya.
Price and running-cost discipline
No sufficiently reliable current Kenyan asking-price range for a 2019 RT Limited was found, so imported-US-dollar figures should not be presented as a local value. Ask for the original purchase and import documents, then compare the total landed and rectification cost with supported touring alternatives. BRP specifies premium unleaded but publishes no combined consumption figure in the cited sheet. Use several owner full-tank records and current EPRA pricing to build a fuel budget. Add comprehensive insurance, secure storage, three tyres, specialist labour, international freight and a large repair reserve.
Test ride for fit, not just speed
A Spyder does not lean like a motorcycle. Test steering effort, cornering forces, braking, heat management, wind protection, rider reach and passenger comfort on a safe route. Its 1,572 mm width and 459 kg dry weight remove normal bike filtering and manual-parking advantages. The 155-litre storage, reverse gear and two-up touring equipment are genuine strengths, but only if they match your actual use.
Walk away when
Walk away if the VIN or import trail is inconsistent; recall status cannot be documented; the dashboard shows unresolved faults; diagnostic access is unavailable; tyres are mismatched or unavailable; suspension, steering or gearbox behaviour is abnormal; body repairs hide structural damage; or the seller cannot explain who will service it. The correct purchase is the best-documented, fully functioning machine with a credible support route—not simply the cheapest or brightest Spyder available.
