Decide what the SUV must do before choosing the badge
The Proton X70 and Mahindra Scorpio-N can enter the same Kenyan shopping list, but a useful buying decision starts with passengers, route and budget. Write down your normal monthly distance, how frequently every seat is occupied, the worst section of road you regularly use and where the vehicle will be serviced. These four answers are more valuable than a generic “best SUV” verdict.
This guide accompanies Overdrive's official X70–Scorpio-N Auto Show upload, published on 29 June 2026. It uses researched model information, not a supplied transcript or creator script. It does not attribute test-drive impressions to the presenter. Sources and local ownership context were checked on 7 October 2026.
Build two quotations that can actually be compared
Ask each seller for the VIN, build date, model year, exact trim, engine identification, gearbox and drivetrain. Include seating layout and a signed equipment schedule. Ask whether the car is new, demonstrator or used, whether it has already been registered, and who will honour the warranty.
Do not place “latest X70” and “Scorpio-N full option” in a spreadsheet as if those were specifications. Proton's Malaysian 2025 and 2026 engine references differ: the former is rated at 177 PS/255 Nm, the latter at 181 PS/290 Nm. The reference year is essential. 2025 manufacturer announcement; 2026 manufacturer announcement. Neither announcement establishes the year of Kenyan stock.
For the Mahindra, specify 4x2 or 4x4 in writing. The South African brochure separates these configurations and trim equipment; the Kenyan page advertises a diesel automatic and seven seats. Confirm what is actually being supplied. Manufacturer brochure; Kenyan distributor. If you need low range for a regular route, get the operation demonstrated safely by someone who knows the vehicle and its manual.
Price evidence and its limits
On 7 October 2026, Proton Kenya's X70 page displayed “Starting from KSh. 5,578,000.00 PM. T&Cs apply.” The same page retains an expired July 2023 promotion elsewhere. The “PM” label, price inclusions and currency of the offer are unclear. Treat KES 5,578,000 as displayed advertising, not a verified cash or on-road price. Obtain a fresh written quotation. Proton Kenya.
The checked Mahindra Kenya Scorpio-N page did not supply an identifiable cash price. This guide therefore gives no invented current price for it and no combined price for the comparison. Ask for a dated quote identifying the trim, VAT treatment, registration, delivery, accessories and discount conditions. For a used vehicle, record the asking price separately from any independently negotiated sale price.
Both quotations should show the deposit, balance, delivery date, insurance treatment and cancellation conditions. For finance, request the annual rate, fees, term, total amount repayable and any final balloon payment. A small monthly instalment can conceal a long repayment period; compare the full obligation alongside the cash purchase.
Resolve the conflicting fields before paying
Three checks deserve extra attention:
- X70 engine: the Kenyan Premium 2WD table contains both four-cylinder and three-cylinder descriptions. Exact engine identity remains unverified; match the build documentation to the vehicle.
- X70 phone integration: the Kenyan page contains mirror-link and CarPlay/Android Auto wording. Test your own phone and ask which system is fitted.
- Scorpio-N width: the Kenyan source gives 1,997 mm and the South African brochure 1,917 mm. The difference is unresolved. Measure for your parking constraints instead of accepting an averaged figure.

Exact Kenyan ground clearance, payload, towing limits, cargo volume, measured consumption and build-specific assistance features have not been independently confirmed here. Get the relevant manual and specification certificate where those fields affect your purchase.
Plan a useful test drive
Take the people and a representative bag or child seat that will normally travel with you. Check driving position, visibility, entry, rear-seat comfort, seat-belt access and where luggage will go. In the seven-seat Mahindra, use the third row and load the boot at the same time. Practical capacity is a lived arrangement, not the number of seats in a heading.
Request ordinary traffic, legal-speed open-road driving and safe parking manoeuvres. With permission, use a representative uneven section rather than an extreme stunt. Listen for knocks, check braking and steering response, and operate the air conditioning after the cabin has warmed up. Do not infer measured ride quality or fuel economy from a short demonstration.
For an X70, include slow movement and hill restarts with the DCT both cold and warm. For a Scorpio-N, verify transmission operation and, where fitted, the correct 4x4 controls using the manual. These are inspection prompts, not reports of known faults. Walk away from a seller who will not permit a reasonable independent assessment.
Build a monthly budget with visible assumptions
For 15 September–14 October 2026, Nairobi's published fuel ceilings are KES 214.03/litre petrol and KES 217.86/litre diesel. EPRA cycle and Citizen Digital's dated report identify the period. Use your town's price when it differs.
The calculation is: monthly kilometres × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. For 1,000 km and an illustrative 10 L/100 km, the result is KES 21,403 petrol or KES 21,786 diesel. This assumes equal consumption purely to explain the arithmetic; it is not an X70 or Scorpio-N efficiency result. Increasing the assumption to 12 L/100 km gives KES 25,684 petrol or KES 26,143 diesel. Record real consumption after purchase using repeated fill-to-fill measurements.
Then add a service reserve. If, purely for planning, you set aside KES 60,000 annually for scheduled maintenance and wear items, the monthly provision is KES 5,000. That is your chosen reserve, not a workshop quote and not a prediction of either model's bills. Replace it with an itemised schedule. Add actual insurance, financing and parking costs separately, and retain room for unscheduled repairs. Depreciation also matters if you intend to sell soon, but no verified comparative resale percentage is available here.
Establish support before the car needs it
Use Proton Kenya's service locator and Mahindra Kenya's dealer directory to identify a contact convenient to your home or regular route. A listed dealer is a starting point: confirm that it services your exact model and has the required diagnostic access.
Ask for a written price and lead time for filters, brake pads, a windscreen, a headlamp and tyres in the fitted size. Request a separate lead time for parts that must be ordered. Find out where major engine, gearbox or four-wheel-drive work is performed and what recovery support exists. A contact number does not prove parts are on the shelf.
Get the Kenyan warranty terms and the VIN-specific maintenance schedule. Confirm kilometre and time limits, commercial-use conditions, required service records and how a claim is authorised. Do not import Malaysian or South African warranty promises into a Kenyan agreement.
Used-car and handover checklist
Before a used purchase, arrange an independent inspection with a written report. Match chassis and engine identifiers, look for accident repairs and corrosion, scan for diagnostic faults, check service invoices and inspect tyres, brakes, suspension and fluid leaks. For a vehicle advertised as new, still record tyre dates, mileage, cosmetic condition and included accessories.
NTSA's service portal provides registration and inspection services through eCitizen and a logbook-verification facility. Use the official process to check documents and handle the relevant transaction; verify current requirements and fees there rather than paying a broker on a verbal promise. Keep the seller's identity, invoice and written sale conditions consistent with the vehicle documentation.
At handover, collect both keys where promised, the correct manual, warranty documents, service history, receipt, registration documentation and the signed equipment list. Photograph any agreed defects and record the remedy and deadline.
Match the final choice to the job
Choose the X70 as a starting point for a cabin-led, everyday family shortlist, then prove the exact equipment and suitability on your demonstration. Shortlist the Scorpio-N 4x4 when its documented drivetrain and additional seating answer a real need; assess the 4x2 separately when low-range capability is unnecessary.
For alternatives, investigate comparable-year RAV4 or CR-V examples for the road-focused brief, and Fortuner or mu-X configurations for the seven-seat 4x4 brief. Check their specifications, history, price and support independently. No blanket reliability or resale ranking is implied.
Buy the documented vehicle, with the support you can reach and the total cost you can carry. A clear quotation and a useful inspection are stronger buying tools than an unexplained feature claim.
