Tekken 200 Discovery: Kenya buying guide
Choose the job before the advert
Write down what the bike must do every week: commute distance, surface, luggage, passenger use, parking arrangement and nearest workshop. Then assess the actual motorcycle against those needs. Avoid buying an adventure image and hoping your routine will accommodate it.
This guide uses researched Kenyan market information. It does not establish the exact specification or production year of the video motorcycle. A Discovery 200, a 250 and a 250 X are not interchangeable parts references.
Documentary checks
Obtain the current registration record, seller identification and evidence that the seller can transfer the bike. Match chassis and engine identifiers to the motorcycle itself. Record the precise engine code and any manufacturer plate. Ask for the correct manual and maintenance history; a generic manual for a similar motorcycle is insufficient for torque settings, oil choice or parts ordering.
If the advert's year and registration year differ, ask which is build year, first-registration year and seller description. Do not assume fresh plastics make an older motorcycle a newer model. Check finance or other encumbrances through the proper ownership-transfer channels before releasing money.
Nairobi Powerbikes' public Tekken page currently describes the 249 cc range. Do not transfer its power, brake, tank or gearbox numbers to a 200 without exact-unit documentation. Nairobi Powerbikes, checked 7 October 2026.
Price preparation
The AMD catalogue provides three distinct context points: 2024 Tekken 200 cc KSh 235,000; used 2025 Discovery 200 KSh 259,000; and 2026 Discovery 200 KSh 287,000, checked 7 October 2026. They differ in description, year, seller and condition. Use them to frame enquiries, then compare like with like; they are neither completed-sale prices nor a valuation of the reviewed bike. Prepare a total purchase budget with cash price, transfer or registration, inspection, insurance, riding gear, first service, tyres and repair reserve. Get a written invoice stating every included item. For instalments, compare deposit plus all repayments and compulsory fees with the cash price. Read late-payment, repossession and early-settlement clauses before signing.
Negotiate from defects with quoted repair costs. A tyre with little safe life remaining, a leaking fork and an overdue service are concrete deductions. They are more useful negotiating grounds than a broad claim that “another dealer is cheaper.”
Inspect it cold
Ask that the engine remain cold before you arrive. With an independent technician, check start behaviour, warm idle, leakage, smoke, clutch operation, gear selection and charging. Check the tank for contamination, the fuel lines for cracking and the exhaust for insecure mounting. Inspect the chain for tight spots and the sprockets for hooked teeth.
At the front, inspect steering movement, bearing play, fork tubes, seals, disc surfaces, pads and wheel condition. At the rear, inspect swingarm play, shock attachment, wheel bearings and brake operation. Check controls, stand mounting, mirrors, indicators, horn and headlight. Record tyre size, age, condition and suitability for the intended surfaces.
Check modifications individually. Protection bars must not obstruct controls. Luggage mounts must not foul suspension or exhaust. Electrical accessories should have appropriate installation rather than a nest of exposed wires. Ask for any removed original parts.
An attractive clean motorcycle can still need immediate expenditure. A technician's findings should determine whether it is a buy, a negotiated buy or a walk-away.
Test fit and test ride
Sit on the bike wearing your intended footwear. Check reach to brake, clutch and pedals. With help, evaluate low-speed balance, turning room and reversing from a parking space. If luggage is fitted, repeat the parking exercise with the empty cases attached. Do not use an unsupported advertised seat-height figure to decide fit.
For a permitted legal test ride, look for straight tracking, predictable acceleration, smooth shifting and consistent braking. Assess vibration and wind exposure at your normal route speed. Do not mistake a brief fast run for proof of long-distance comfort or mechanical health.
If a passenger is a regular requirement, confirm the approved load, proper footrests and actual seating comfort. Luggage capacity and gross load limits must come from the correct manual or plate.
Prove parts support
Ask a local workshop to quote matching filters, brake pads, chain and sprockets, clutch cable, levers, bearings and fork seals against the exact engine/chassis identification. Establish stocked quantity and expected delivery time. An unanswered part-number enquiry is valuable purchase information.
Ask who handles major repairs and which electrical components fit. Confirm whether the quoted labour includes diagnosis and what happens when a fault cannot be identified immediately. Keep a repair contingency for an unfamiliar model rather than spending the entire budget on accessories.
For a new purchase, obtain a warranty document identifying seller, scope, duration, mileage ceiling, excluded consumables, service intervals and claim process. For a used purchase, obtain written confirmation of any transferable cover. No verified factory warranty has been established for the exact reviewed 200 Discovery in this research.
Running-cost calculator
Use measured fuel consumption once available: petrol cost per kilometre equals price per litre divided by measured km/L. EPRA's Nairobi reference is KSh 214.03/L for 15 September–14 October 2026. At an assumed 35 km/L, that yields KSh 6.12/km; the assumed economy is not a tested Tekken figure. EPRA.
Add monthly insurance allocation, service allocation, tyre wear, chain/sprocket wear and contingency. A 30 km commute over 22 workdays covers 660 km, so the example's fuel alone would be about KSh 4,036. This illustration excludes detours and every other ownership cost.
Before paying
Keep photographs of identifiers, signed invoice, inspection report, written warranty where applicable, original keys and the correct manual. Require clear transfer/registration arrangements and a receipt for payment. Complete the legal riding setup: appropriate licence, insurance, helmet and reflective jacket, with passenger equipment if needed. Traffic Act section 103B.
Choose this bike if its identity is documented, the actual condition is good, your fit and route suit it, and local matching-part support is satisfactory. Choose another machine if those checks remain unanswered. The goal is affordable riding, not affordable uncertainty.
