The Overdrive review

Three SUVs, three different jobs

The useful question in this comparison is what your car must do on an ordinary Tuesday. School bags, a supermarket stop and a tight parking ramp make one set of demands. A long family journey with a rough final stretch makes another. Regular trail driving makes a third. Buying the most dramatic vehicle can be enjoyable, but it is a costly way to solve the wrong problem.

The Citroën C5 Aircross, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler Rubicon sit under the broad SUV umbrella while pursuing different priorities. Our buying recommendation starts with those priorities, then asks whether the individual vehicle has the condition, equipment and support to deliver them.

Research basis: this is a general-information Overdrive Review comparison accompanying the official episode. The episode identifies the subject; no transcript or creator script grounds this article. Specifications below describe explicitly labelled reference variants, not a verified identification of every car shown. The analysis does not attribute a driving impression or finding to Quentin or another presenter. Sources were checked on 7 October 2026.

What the reference models actually offer

| Vehicle and reference | Manufacturer-backed distinction | Buying implication | |---|---|---| | First-generation European C5 Aircross, 2018 launch / 2019 sales era | Three separate sliding, reclining, folding rear seats; combustion-model boot quoted at 580–720 litres with those seats upright. Citroën reference | Put your actual passengers and luggage in it; rear seat position changes the compromise. | | Grand Cherokee WK2, 2018 US technical reference, 3.6 V6 | 3,604 cc petrol V6, up to 295 SAE hp, eight-speed automatic; four-wheel-drive and transfer-case specification varies. Jeep technical sheet | Verify engine and drivetrain from the build information rather than the shape or badge. | | Wrangler JL Rubicon, 2018 Africa/Middle East 3.6 reference | Manufacturer quotes 284 hp and 347 Nm with an eight-speed automatic. Rubicon hardware includes a 4:1 low range, axle locks and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. Jeep launch reference | Dedicated trail equipment has a purpose; establish whether your routes justify it. |

These are reference facts, not one blended specification. A newer Grand Cherokee is not a WK2, a plug-in C5 is not the combustion model in the table, and a Wrangler sold in another market may have a different engine. Imported vehicles need their own build and service evidence.

C5 Aircross: begin with the people inside

The C5 is the most natural starting point here when family accommodation matters more than an off-road identity. Its individual rear seats turn the second row into a useful adjustment tool. That does not prove that three particular child seats will fit: installation, anchor positions and the child-seat instructions still decide the answer.

Citroën's first-generation design uses Progressive Hydraulic Cushions and offers Advanced Comfort seats. Those are documented design features, not our measurement of ride quality. Judge the actual car on your commute, with its fitted tyres and passengers. Manufacturer description

The UK launch range included petrol and diesel engines, manual and EAT8 automatic choices. The name C5 Aircross therefore does not establish a single engine, gearbox or fuel bill. UK range specification For a mostly urban buyer, the useful exercise is to compare the exact petrol and diesel options against annual distance, trip length and maintenance history. A cheap purchase loses its appeal if a neglected engine immediately consumes the repair budget.

Our editorial assessment is that the C5 deserves the first viewing for everyday family use. Make it earn that place by checking loading height, rear ventilation, visibility, seat adjustment and parking access rather than accepting a comfort slogan.

Grand Cherokee: the middle ground needs the right specification

The Grand Cherokee makes sense to investigate when you want an SUV for longer journeys and also have a genuine traction requirement. It occupies a different place in this shortlist from a trail-focused Wrangler, but its badge alone does not settle what it can do.

The WK2 manufacturer sheet lists several engines and different four-wheel-drive systems. A two-speed transfer case with low range is a configuration-specific feature; do not assume every Grand Cherokee has it. 2018 technical reference Ask the seller to demonstrate the fitted controls and match them to the build record. The same discipline applies to suspension equipment and assistance features.

A used luxury SUV should be bought by condition. Check the cooling system, gearbox behaviour, underbody, tyres and every fitted electrical function. If the car has adjustable suspension, test the specified modes and have that system inspected. These are inspection priorities rather than a claim that every example has a particular fault.

For the family that travels substantial distances and wants one vehicle for several roles, the Grand Cherokee is the most interesting compromise to assess in person. The compromise succeeds only when the drivetrain suits the routes and the ownership budget suits the car.

Rubicon: buy the hardware for a real reason

The Rubicon's attraction is unusually clear. Its low gearing and traction hardware address difficult terrain; the JL also uses solid axles and offers removable roof and door configurations. That is a different engineering brief from maximising effortless family use. Wrangler manufacturer reference

Our inference from that brief is straightforward: include the Rubicon when challenging off-road driving is a recurring activity or when its character is itself part of the purchase. For a buyer who mainly encounters potholes and occasional gravel, first compare a less specialised vehicle. More equipment is useful when you use it, while every fitted or modified system still needs maintenance.

Test the actual roof configuration for sealing, noise and convenience. Check access with the passengers who will use it. A two-door and a four-door Wrangler present different family-use questions. Review tyre specification, modifications and underbody condition with someone who understands the platform. A lift kit, large tyres or aftermarket bumpers are items to assess, not automatic evidence of a better car.

The Rubicon is the purpose-led choice here for trail enthusiasts. That is not a measured declaration that it is the best highway cruiser or the lowest-cost family SUV.

The Kenyan ownership question

There is an identifiable local support route. Urysia's official company profile describes its Kenyan Citroën, Jeep and Peugeot dealership, maintenance, genuine parts and bodyshop services. Urysia official profile The Peugeot Kenya contact page also provides an Urysia service contact. Kenyan contact This establishes whom to approach; it does not prove that a component for an older imported variant is in stock, or that a foreign warranty applies here.

Before buying, send the VIN and engine information and request separate quotes for the next service, consumables and any diagnosed repair. Ask for lead times and whether the workshop supports the precise import specification. Do the same with an independent specialist whose experience you can establish. A service network is most useful when it can give an answer about your car.

Engine identification matters particularly on the C5. Citroën acknowledges specific issues in earlier 1.0/1.2 PureTech engines through its support programme. Official PureTech notice Stellantis separately identifies camshaft-chain issues for certain 1.5 BlueHDi engines produced between October 2017 and January 2023. Official BlueHDi notice These notices justify a VIN and campaign-history check where relevant. They do not establish that the C5 in the episode has either engine, that every example is affected, or that European support terms cover a Kenyan import.

No current Kenyan transaction price was verified for a like-for-like set of these three variants. An asking price without the year, equipment, history and sale terms is a weak comparison. Get written all-in quotations dated to the buying decision. Fuel budgeting should use your route's measured consumption and the current town's published or displayed pump price; conflicting cached EPRA figures were excluded from this research. EPRA

Which one should be on your shortlist?

| Your main use | First vehicle to investigate | The condition that makes the choice sensible | |---|---|---| | Daily family errands and paved-road travel | C5 Aircross | The exact engine has a sound record and the cabin fits your household. | | Long family journeys with a recurring rough-road or traction requirement | Grand Cherokee | Its actual four-wheel-drive equipment meets the route and maintenance is budgeted. | | Regular technical trail driving | Wrangler Rubicon | You will use the specialist hardware and accept its everyday packaging. | | Lowest financial commitment | Compare exact quotations across all three | Include immediate repairs, fuel, tyres, insurance and downtime, then choose by total cost. |

The Overdrive recommendation is to match the vehicle to the job before paying for the badge. Start with the C5 for family needs, examine the Grand Cherokee for a broad touring brief, and choose the Rubicon for a clearly defined enthusiast role. Then let the individual inspection decide whether the particular car deserves your money. This roundup has no single vehicle score: an average across three different machines would obscure the buying decision.

Strengths

  • C5 reference model offers useful independent rear-seat adjustment for family loading.
  • Grand Cherokee specifications let buyers assess a touring brief against actual drivetrain equipment.
  • Rubicon reference hardware has a clear role for dedicated trail use.
  • An identifiable Kenyan dealership and service contact exists for Citroën and Jeep.

Weaknesses

  • Model names alone do not identify engines, drivetrains, equipment or applicable service campaigns.
  • No verified like-for-like current Kenyan transaction prices or tested fuel figures establish a cost winner.
  • Specialist off-road equipment and modifications require inspection and a defined ownership purpose.

Running costs

Budget from an exact written purchase quotation plus diagnosed repairs, servicing, tyres, insurance and fuel. Fuel cost is distance ÷ 100 × measured L/100 km × the current town-specific pump price. EPRA is the official price-check starting point; inconsistent cached figures were excluded. No current price or consumption claim is assigned to the three-vehicle lineup.

Maintenance considerations

Use the schedule and fluid specifications for the identified engine and original market. Obtain service records, diagnostic inspection and VIN-specific campaign information. Relevant older engine families should be checked against Citroën PureTech or Stellantis 1.5 BlueHDi notices; European terms are not proof of Kenyan eligibility. Inspect each Jeep drivetrain and every fitted suspension system independently.

Parts and service availability

Urysia's official profile describes Kenyan Citroën and Jeep parts and workshop support. Peugeot Kenya supplies the associated service contact. Request VIN-specific compatibility, prices and delivery times. These sources establish a support route, not guaranteed stock for an older imported vehicle.

Who is it for?

Start with the C5 for everyday family accommodation, the correctly specified Grand Cherokee for a broader touring brief, and a genuine Rubicon for regular trail use or an informed enthusiast purchase. The independent inspection and total ownership cost decide whether a particular example is worth buying.

Alternatives to consider

  • Compare C5 and Grand Cherokee directly if daily family use dominates; let cabin fit, history and ownership quotations decide.
  • Compare a less specialised Wrangler specification with the Rubicon if dedicated trail hardware is unlikely to be used.
  • Compare the existing well-maintained family vehicle against replacement costs before taking on an unknown used SUV.
