The Overdrive review

Yamaha's five-way choice: street bike, rough-road tool, scooter or motocross machine?

A Yamaha MT-09, MT-03, XTZ150, 125 cc scooter and YZ85 do not belong in a straight race for the best motorcycle. They belong in a conversation about what riding you want to do. Some are road-bike choices; one is a specialist youth motocross machine; one cannot be technically assessed until its actual scooter model is named. The smartest purchase begins by understanding those roles.

This article uses general research about the model families associated with the official Overdrive episode. It makes no claim to reproduce a presenter verdict or a road test. Exact years, the scooter's identity and the individual motorcycles' equipment are unconfirmed. Official reference variants are labelled below so a buyer can use them without accidentally transferring their specifications to another build.

Start with the category

| Model family | Technical reference used here | A useful buying brief | | --- | --- | --- | | MT-09 | Current CFAO Mobility Kenya listing: 890 cc, six-speed reference, year unstated | Experienced rider seeking a performance-focused street bike | | MT-03 | Yamaha US 2025 reference: 321 cc twin, six-speed, ABS | Rider assessing a smaller-capacity road-bike option | | XTZ150 | Yamaha El Salvador reference: 149 cc air-cooled single, fuel injection, five-speed | Rider whose ordinary route includes uneven or unsealed surfaces | | 125 cc scooter | Exact model, year, equipment and identity unconfirmed | Urban rider who first needs to establish storage, ergonomics and support | | YZ85 | Yamaha US 2025 standard-wheel reference: 85 cc two-stroke, six-speed | Youth motocross and controlled-course use, rather than an ordinary commute |

Reference sources: CFAO MT-09, Yamaha MT-03 specifications, Yamaha XTZ150 and Yamaha YZ85 specifications. These rows identify sources, not the production years or equipment of bikes in the episode.

MT-09: a deliberate performance choice

CFAO Mobility Kenya's MT-09 page lists an 890 cc engine, 87.5 kW, a six-speed gearbox and a 14-litre tank. The page does not establish the model year of the episode bike. Earlier MT-09 generations therefore should not be assigned these figures just because the badge is familiar. Official local distributor listing.

The MT-09's role in this comparison is the performance-focused road-bike option. Before buying one, consider your riding experience, route, throttle control and appetite for the associated ownership budget. Greater performance capability does not answer whether the motorcycle is the easiest tool for your everyday travel. A rider can want that capability legitimately while still needing a separate allowance for training, tyres and maintenance.

Assess the actual bike at ordinary road speeds and in your parking environment. Does the control layout fit? Can you manage slow turns and stops comfortably? Are the modifications documented? Verify fitted electronics and suspension by model year and equipment record. A newer brochure is not evidence that an older example carries the same aids, and a seller's mention of an option should be checked on the motorcycle itself.

MT-03: smaller capacity, still a proper ownership decision

Yamaha's US 2025 MT-03 specifications identify a 321 cc liquid-cooled twin, six-speed transmission and ABS. Those reference details do not identify the year of an imported Kenyan example. In particular, generation-specific equipment should be confirmed rather than backdated to every MT-03. Yamaha's official US 2025 reference.

For a shopper who wants a road bike with a smaller-capacity engine than the MT-09, the MT-03 is a logical candidate. The relevant questions remain rider fit, route, condition and support. It should be assessed in person rather than declared ideal for every beginner. Training quality, braking skills, control confidence and sensible riding habits remain part of the purchase.

Compare commuting priorities honestly. Luggage mounting and passenger comfort need a real check, as does the physical effort of moving the bike around at home. Look beyond the purchase price to tyres, chain and sprockets, brakes and scheduled maintenance. A clean small-capacity motorcycle may make a better decision than a neglected larger one, but the comparison must be based on actual condition and quotes.

XTZ150: rough-road intent needs actual configuration

The Yamaha El Salvador reference lists a 149 cc air-cooled SOHC single, fuel injection and a five-speed transmission. It also lists a front disc and rear drum. The year and Kenyan-market configuration of the episode motorcycle remain unconfirmed; those reference specifications should be matched to the actual bike before ordering parts or describing its equipment. Official regional XTZ150 page.

The XTZ150's category makes it worth considering when a daily route includes broken edges, gravel access or other uneven surfaces. That does not establish a measured advantage for the particular example. Check the actual wheels, tyres, suspension condition, clearance and rider fit. A dual-purpose silhouette cannot compensate for worn suspension or unsuitable tyres.

Ask how often the bike will also carry a passenger or travel on faster roads. Obtain the correct load limit and inspect luggage mounting. For a used purchase, look carefully at wheel alignment, spokes where fitted, steering bearings, fork seals and repair quality. A motorcycle that has spent time on rough routes deserves an inspection focused on the consequences of that use, without assuming it has been abused.

The 125 cc scooter: the missing name matters

The scooter is identified only by engine class. That is insufficient to assign a transmission type, wheel size, fuel economy, storage volume, braking system or service schedule. The first task is to establish the manufacturer model code and production year, then obtain its matching technical document.

CFAO's Kenyan scooter page lists RayZR 110 and RayZR 125 products. That gives a local reference to investigate, but it does not prove that the unnamed scooter in the episode is either one. CFAO Mobility Kenya scooter range. A local catalogue is a source for its own products, not a way to identify an unknown vehicle from engine capacity alone.

For city use, assess the actual scooter's parking convenience, control reach, under-seat storage and ability to carry the luggage you need. If it uses a belt transmission, obtain the correct belt and clutch maintenance requirements; if it uses another arrangement, use that model's procedure. Wheel and tyre condition matter particularly when your route includes potholes. The point is to check the product you will own, not attach generic scooter advantages to an unidentified machine.

YZ85: small engine, specialist motocross purpose

Yamaha's US 2025 standard YZ85 reference has an 85 cc liquid-cooled two-stroke engine, six-speed gearbox and 17-inch front/14-inch rear wheels. The YZ85LW is a separate configuration, so its wheel sizes should not be mixed into the standard bike. Yamaha's official reference.

This is a youth motocross decision, not a comparison with an urban commuter merely because the engine capacity is small. Budget for a supervised riding environment, suitable protective equipment, transport and maintenance appropriate to the actual machine's use. Rider size, experience and coaching matter more than treating an 85 cc badge as reassurance.

Do not assume road registration or public-road suitability. Verify any actual registration and homologation claim with the relevant documents; otherwise plan for closed-course use. The matching owner manual should determine fuel and lubrication procedures, inspection intervals and engine maintenance. No universal two-stroke mixture or service schedule is assigned here. A used competition bike needs a technician who understands the model and can assess its engine and suspension condition.

Kenyan support, running costs and lawful use

Yamaha's global distributor directory names CFAO Mobility Kenya, while CFAO's FAQ describes Yamaha product and spares supply through its branches and dealer network. That establishes a local point of contact. It does not promise immediate availability for every older import or competition component. Ask about the actual model code, year and needed parts, and get price and lead time in writing.

No current Kenyan purchase price has been verified for the exact machines in this collection. Compare dated quotations that identify the model and equipment, and obtain the motorcycle-specific warranty terms for a new purchase. For a used bike, combine the offer price with an independent condition report and the bill for work needed before regular use.

Fuel costs should use the petrol price applicable at purchase and realistic consumption for the route. The calculation is monthly kilometres × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × shillings per litre. At an illustrative 1,000 km per month, 3L/100 km means 30 litres and 5L/100 km means 50 litres. These planning scenarios are not tested figures for any bike here. Competition use also needs its own maintenance and consumables allowance, rather than simply a commuter fuel comparison.

For road use, Kenya's Traffic Act section 103B requires a valid rider licence, third-party insurance, helmets and reflective jackets for rider and passenger, and allows only one passenger. Match the insurance category to the intended use. Government-hosted Traffic Act.

The Overdrive choice

Shortlist the MT-09 when experienced street riding and performance are central to the brief. Assess the MT-03 when a smaller-capacity road bike fits the route and rider. Investigate the XTZ150 when uneven surfaces are a regular part of the week. Identify the scooter fully before judging its urban convenience. Choose the YZ85 for an appropriate youth motocross programme with the support that purpose requires.

This collection has no single machine specification and no combined Overdrive Review Score. Its value is the distinction between different jobs. Once the job is clear, an actual bike's identity, inspection, support and first-year cost can decide the purchase. Buying the most impressive member of a lineup is easy; buying the right one takes those additional checks.

Strengths

  • The lineup covers distinct road-bike, dual-purpose, scooter and motocross jobs.
  • Yamaha primary technical references are clearly labelled by region and year.
  • An identifiable official Yamaha distributor and spares channel operate in Kenya.

Weaknesses

  • The exact125 cc scooter and the episode motorcycles’ years remain unconfirmed.
  • No current Kenyan price is verified for the exact individual examples.
  • The YZ85’s competition role cannot be treated as an ordinary road-commuter comparison.

Running costs

Request dated quotes for the exact model, then budget inspection, insurance where appropriate, gear, tyres, service, final-drive parts, secure parking and training. Use distance × litres per 100 km ÷100 × the applicable fuel price for petrol budgeting. YZ85 ownership additionally needs venue, coaching, transport and competition-maintenance planning.

Maintenance considerations

Match the manual and schedule to the production year and model code. Inspect road-bike tyres, brakes, bearings, suspension and drivetrain. Establish the unnamed scooter’s transmission before quoting belt or clutch intervals. The YZ85 requires its own factory fuel, lubrication and competition-maintenance instructions; no universal premix ratio is assigned.

Parts and service availability

Yamaha’s manufacturer network identifies CFAO Mobility Kenya. CFAO describes Yamaha spares through its branches and dealers. Get actual model-year compatibility, prices, stock and lead times in writing, particularly for an older import or competition part; network presence does not establish immediate availability.

Who is it for?

The collection suits buyers deciding between distinct activities. MT-09 shoppers should want its performance class; MT-03 shoppers should assess a smaller road-bike brief; XTZ150 shoppers should verify rough-route setup; scooter shoppers should establish the exact identity and usable storage; and YZ85 shoppers should plan an appropriate youth motocross programme.

Alternatives to consider

  • MT-03 or another supported smaller-capacity road bike when everyday street use is the primary brief.
  • XTZ150 or an appropriately documented dual-purpose alternative when uneven surfaces are routine.
  • A fully identified locally supported scooter for an urban convenience brief.
  • A correctly sized closed-course training motorcycle chosen with competent youth coaching.
