Five cars, five briefs: Mercedes luxury and the Prado J250 in Kenya

A flagship saloon and a seven-seat Prado need not compete for the same buyer. We separate the five models by purpose, explain reference specifications and build a Kenyan ownership checklist.

The Overdrive review

Buy the car for the life you actually lead

An S500, G350d, GLE400d, E220d and Prado J250 make an impressive list, but they do not answer the same question. One buyer wants a rear-seat office. Another wants an executive commuter. A third needs family loading, while someone else plans journeys well beyond the easiest roads. The sensible comparison starts with the job and the ownership plan, then considers the badge.

This is a general-information Overdrive Review comparison accompanying the official episode. No transcript or creator script is used to report what a presenter experienced. We use manufacturer documents for clearly labelled reference variants and Kenyan distributor material for local support. The years in the topic do not prove a production specification; the exact vehicles in the episode have not been independently identified. Sources were checked on 7 October 2026.

The reference specification, separated by model

| Model being considered | Labelled reference | Manufacturer figures and important distinction | |---|---|---| | S500 2021 | W223 launch-era S500 4MATIC | 2,999 cc inline-six petrol, 320 kW / 435 PS, 520 Nm, 9G-TRONIC. Mercedes reference | | G350d 2019 | New-generation G350d introduced for 2019 | 2,925 cc inline-six diesel, 210 kW / 286 PS, 600 Nm, 9G-TRONIC, permanent four-wheel drive. Mercedes reference | | GLE400d | V167 SUV launch-era GLE400d 4MATIC, 2019 reference | 2,925 cc inline-six diesel, 243 kW / 330 PS, 700 Nm, 9G-TRONIC. Mercedes reference | | E220d 2021 | W213 2020 facelift reference | 1,950 cc four-cylinder diesel, 143 kW / 194 PS, 400 Nm; E220d and E220d 4MATIC versions are separately listed. Mercedes reference | | Prado J250 2024 | Kenya 2024 2.8 diesel range | 2,755 cc four-cylinder diesel, 150 kW, 500 Nm, eight-speed automatic, full-time four-wheel drive and seven seats. Manufacturer horsepower units are retained where shown. These facts do not form a single machine specification and should not be applied indiscriminately to another market or production update. A badge such as S500 is not an engine-capacity statement.

S500: define what luxury must do for you

The S500 is the candidate to investigate when passenger comfort and a flagship saloon environment are the central brief. The useful buying questions concern the rear-seat configuration, entry and exit, climate control, luggage and the features you will actually use. If you are usually driving alone, compare the benefit of that rear-seat focus against a more modest executive car.

The W223 launch reference includes standard AIRMATIC air suspension and optional rear-wheel steering and rear-seat equipment. Its EQ Boost assistance is temporary; the additional figures should not be simply added to engine torque and advertised as a continuous output. Manufacturer launch description A particular used car's build record is the evidence for its options.

Our editorial inference is that the S500 makes the strongest case here for a buyer who deliberately wants a luxury saloon and has a realistic repair reserve. That inference is not a road-test claim. A clever option list becomes valuable only when the systems work, the local workshop can support them, and the vehicle suits the places you park and travel.

G350d: an identity purchase with a mechanical brief

The G-Class is the choice for someone who wants its distinctive form and an actual off-road vehicle rather than simply a higher seating position. The new-generation G350d reference uses a ladder frame, an independent front axle and a live rear axle. Its diesel aftertreatment includes AdBlue and a particulate filter. 2019-generation manufacturer reference These are reasons to inspect the car as a complete system, not to call it mechanically simple because its exterior is familiar.

Confirm the generation before borrowing figures from this table: first registration in 2019 is not sufficient evidence that a car has the new-generation powertrain. A seller's year label, a cosmetic conversion and the VIN may tell different stories. The build record must settle them.

For most buyers, the G350d is an intentional choice of character and capability. If family loading or executive commuting is the only requirement, it should earn its place through a direct comparison with the more purpose-focused alternatives. An emotional preference is valid; it still deserves an honest budget.

GLE400d: the family SUV candidate

The GLE is the first Mercedes in this list to investigate when the brief combines family use and substantial long-distance driving. The V167 reference has variable four-wheel-drive torque distribution and an optional third row. Its diesel emissions system includes particulate filtration and SCR/AdBlue equipment. GLE manufacturer reference Neither a seven-seat layout nor a particular suspension option should be assumed from the GLE400d badge alone.

Assess it with all regular occupants. Check the loading opening, installed seat count, third-row access if fitted, and luggage with the seats you intend to use. On the road, judge the individual car's wheels, tyres and suspension configuration rather than imagining that every example offers the same ride.

A GLE400d merits a viewing for the buyer who wants an SUV format and strong documented engine output without making the G-Class identity the main purchase. The unresolved questions are the actual equipment, condition, service history and cost to keep those systems working.

E220d: the executive commuter's alternative

The E220d deserves attention when most travel is on paved roads and you want an executive car without needing an SUV body. Do not read '220' as proof of a 2.2-litre engine: the facelift reference in this comparison is the documented 1,950 cc diesel. Mercedes separately lists rear-drive and 4MATIC versions. Facelift model data Identify the individual car rather than borrowing specification from a later update.

Our buying logic is to place the E220d first for the road-focused commuter, then test whether access, luggage and the route justify stepping up to an SUV. It is a candidate for economy-conscious ownership, not a promise of a measured Nairobi fuel figure or lower repair costs in every case. Fuel use, tyre choices and maintenance can all change the result.

If your routine is dominated by short trips, discuss the precise diesel's operating and maintenance requirements with a qualified workshop. Buy from records and diagnostic evidence, not a general belief that a diesel will always save money.

Prado J250: distinguish Kenyan grades from global headlines

The J250 is the candidate to examine when seven-seat packaging, regular travel beyond smooth roads and a local distributor relationship are prominent in the brief. Toyota's 2023 launch describes its GA-F body-on-frame platform; the Kenyan diesel range should be assessed using Kenyan documents rather than figures for the US hybrid. Global platform reference

The 2024 Kenyan sheet distinguishes All Rounder and Adventure grades. Adventure variants list a rear differential lock where the All Rounder columns do not, while tyre sizes and quoted clearance also differ. Kenya grade sheet That makes grade choice a functional decision as well as an equipment decision.

There is a source discrepancy worth preserving. Toyota Kenya's current web overview contains dimension and clearance figures that do not consistently match its downloadable 2024 grade sheet. We leave a single numerical dimension/clearance field unset. The inspection and written grade confirmation should settle the specification for a purchase. Kenyan web overview The same care applies to towing: confirm the actual local homologated limit rather than transferring a foreign brochure rating.

Our assessment is that a correctly specified J250 is the shortlist candidate for a buyer whose route and passengers justify that brief. It is not a proof that every Prado will be cheaper or more dependable than every Mercedes.

Ownership in Kenya: a real support route, a specific quotation

CFAO Mobility Kenya identifies itself as distributor and service provider for both Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. Official Kenyan distributor This is useful, identifiable local ownership evidence. It does not establish the stock of a part for a particular imported S500, the price of a GLE suspension repair, or the warranty status of a used G350d.

Request VIN-specific service and parts quotations before committing. For fitted air or adaptive suspension, assess that exact system. For modern diesels, inspect the complete engine and emissions system rather than treating a quiet cold start as a clean bill of health. For any car, test climate control, cameras, displays, powered seats and assistance functions that can be checked appropriately. These are due-diligence recommendations, not asserted model fault rates.

No dated, comparable Kenyan transaction prices were verified for the five candidates. There is therefore no invented value winner. Compare the purchase sum plus initial work, tyres, insurance, routine maintenance, fuel and potential downtime. Use measured consumption and the current town's pump rate for fuel arithmetic; conflicting cached EPRA figures were excluded. EPRA

Choose by purpose

| Your main requirement | First candidate to investigate | Decisive check | |---|---|---| | Luxury saloon and rear-seat priority | S500 | Actual comfort equipment, working systems and repair budget. | | G-Class character with an off-road brief | G350d | Generation, drivetrain condition and support for the exact import. | | Mercedes family SUV | GLE400d | Fitted seating, suspension specification and maintenance history. | | Paved-road executive commuting | E220d | Route suitability, service record and actual whole-year costs. | | Seven-seat travel and a rough-road brief | Prado J250 | Exact Kenyan grade, real luggage fit and confirmed local specification. |

The Overdrive recommendation is to make a shortlist from the work the car will do. An E220d can answer an executive commuting question that a Prado need not answer; a Prado can answer a passenger-and-route question that an S500 need not answer. The G-Class can be worth choosing for its character, provided the choice is deliberate. A comparison across these roles has no meaningful single vehicle score. The final winner is the inspected example that fulfils your own brief at a cost you can sustain.

Strengths

  • The five-model shortlist covers distinct luxury, commuting, family and travelling briefs.
  • Manufacturer references identify powertrains without combining model generations or markets.
  • The Kenyan J250 grade sheet supports a functional equipment comparison.
  • CFAO provides an identifiable local Toyota and Mercedes-Benz support route.

Weaknesses

  • Exact episode build specifications and individual vehicle condition are not verified by general research.
  • Prices, repair costs, fuel use and component stock require dated, vehicle-specific Kenyan evidence.
  • Conflicting Prado web and PDF dimension figures cannot support one definitive composite specification.
  • Luxury options and specialist equipment require an ownership budget and inspection matched to what is fitted.

Running costs

Compare dated, like-for-like written quotations and add diagnosed immediate work, scheduled maintenance, tyres, insurance, fuel and downtime. No comparable Kenyan transaction price is assigned to this lineup. Fuel arithmetic uses measured L/100 km and the current town-specific pump price; cached conflicts mean no numeric current EPRA rate is asserted.

Maintenance considerations

Identify engine, production date and fitted equipment before selecting the maintenance schedule. Obtain records and a qualified diagnostic inspection, including applicable diesel emissions equipment and any air or adaptive suspension. Test every fitted comfort system. These are purchase checks rather than a claim of a common fault rate across five different vehicles.

Parts and service availability

CFAO Mobility Kenya identifies distributor and service support for Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. Request VIN-specific service, campaign and component quotations with delivery times. Its presence establishes a credible support route, not immediate stock, fixed repair costs or foreign-import warranty eligibility for every model here.

Who is it for?

Investigate S500 for a deliberate luxury-saloon and rear-seat brief, G350d for G-Class character and capability, GLE400d for a Mercedes family SUV, E220d for road-focused executive use, and the exact J250 grade for a seven-seat travelling brief. Individual history and complete ownership quotations decide the purchase.

Alternatives to consider

  • Compare S500 and E220d when the main choice is flagship comfort versus an executive commuting brief.
  • Compare GLE400d and Prado J250 with the actual passengers, luggage and route rather than only engine output.
  • Compare G350d against the GLE or J250 when separating G-Class identity from a functional SUV requirement.
